Africa Training Institute is pleased to announce the Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change. This is both an online and Distance Learning Course, which starts on the 1st of every month.
Overall Course Overview
Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, with profound implications for sustainable development, poverty reduction, food security, water resources, energy systems, disaster risk, and human wellbeing—particularly across Africa.
This 12-month Post Graduate Diploma equips professionals with a comprehensive, interdisciplinary understanding of the science, impacts, policy responses, mitigation, adaptation, and governance of climate change. Drawing on global best practices and strongly contextualised for African development realities, the programme builds practical skills for designing climate-resilient policies, programmes, and projects; accessing climate finance; integrating climate considerations into development planning; and leading low-carbon and adaptive transitions in government, NGOs, the private sector, and international organisations.
The curriculum synthesises the most popular and in-demand elements from leading programmes worldwide (including sectoral focus on water, energy, agriculture, and disaster risk reduction; climate finance and policy; assessment tools; and society–climate linkages) while aligning with Africa Training Institute’s emphasis on practical, development-oriented professional education.
Course Objectives
By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:
- Explain the scientific basis of climate change, key indicators, and global governance frameworks (UNFCCC, Paris Agreement, and related instruments).
- Analyse the multi-sectoral impacts of climate change on ecosystems, economies, livelihoods, health, and vulnerable populations, with special attention to African contexts.
- Design and evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies across key sectors (energy, agriculture, water, transport, industry, urban areas, and waste).
- Apply climate assessment tools, vulnerability analysis, and basic modelling approaches to inform decision-making.
- Integrate climate change considerations into development planning, project design, policy, and organisational strategies.
- Understand climate finance mechanisms, carbon markets, ESG linkages, and pathways to access funding for climate action.
- Communicate climate issues effectively to diverse stakeholders and lead adaptive management and organisational learning processes.
- Conduct applied research on climate change and development challenges relevant to their professional context.

Minimum Entry Requirements
Common regulations governing Post-Graduate Diplomas shall be applicable
The following shall be eligible for admission
- Holders of a Bachelor's Degree from a recognizable University
- Holders of an equivalent qualification from any other recognizable Institution
- Relevant professional experience in development, environment, agriculture, energy, disaster management, policy, or related fields is an advantage but not mandatory.
Practicum / Assessment
- The Entire Duration is one year (2 Semesters)
- Candidates shall be expected to submit 10 Assignments (Continuous Assessment Tests) that account to 70% of their Final Grade, and a Project Paper at the tail end of the course which accounts to 30% of their.
- Final Grade.- Guidelines on the preferred format for the research paper will be provided by the Institute.
Training Format
All materials are made available through the Africa Training Institute Online Learning Platform.
Interactive online modules include video lectures, readings, case studies, practical exercises, templates, discussion forums, and quizzes. Self-paced learning is supported by optional live sessions and peer interaction.
