Renewable Energy Training in Africa: Togo’s Solar Boost

Togo’s New Solar Plant Sparks Demand for Renewable Energy Training in Africa

On May 8, 2025, the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved €26.5 million to fund a 62 MWp solar power plant in Sokodé, Togo, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy in Africa. This project, supported by €18.5 million from AfDB and €8 million from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), will generate 87 GWh of clean electricity annually, powering communities and reducing CO₂ emissions by 13,600 tons yearly. At Africa Training Institute, our renewable energy training in Africa equips professionals to lead such transformative projects, fostering sustainable development across the continent.

Togo’s Solar Plant Drives Renewable Energy Training

The Sokodé solar plant, developed by Électricité de France (EDF), includes an 11 km transmission line and is expected to enhance Togo’s energy security while supporting its climate goals under the Paris Agreement. Kevin Kariuki, AfDB’s Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate, and Green Growth, called it a “landmark achievement” for Togo’s renewable energy ambitions. This initiative aligns with Togo’s M300 energy compact, aiming to expand electricity access, a priority echoed in our Sustainable Development Course, which covers energy policy and project management.

Why Renewable Energy Skills Matter

With 600 million Africans lacking electricity, projects like Sokodé’s solar plant underscore the need for skilled professionals in renewable energy. The AfDB’s investment will create jobs and stimulate local economies, but success depends on expertise in project design, implementation, and monitoring. Our training programs teach you to:

  • Develop renewable energy projects aligned with global standards.
  • Monitor and evaluate energy initiatives for maximum impact.
  • Secure funding through partnerships like AfDB’s SEFA.

“The renewable energy course transformed my approach to project planning,” said Aisha, a graduate from Lagos.
