Africa Training Institute is pleased to announce the Diploma in Climate Finance. This is both an online and Distance Learning Course, which starts on the 1st of every month.
Overall Course Overview
Climate finance is critical for Africa’s response to climate change, supporting mitigation, adaptation, resilience, and just transitions amid growing funding gaps, limited access to international sources, and the need to mobilise private capital. This 6-month Diploma equips development professionals, government officials, NGO staff, financiers, and project practitioners with practical knowledge and skills to understand the global and African climate finance architecture, design bankable projects, access funds, structure innovative instruments, manage climate risks, ensure inclusivity and safeguards, and monitor results. The programme draws on global best practices (UNFCCC, Paris Agreement, Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, multilateral development banks, carbon markets, blended finance) while prioritising African contexts, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), local institutions, and real-world case studies from the continent. It combines theory with hands-on tools for proposal development, risk analysis, and results-based management so participants can immediately apply learning in their organisations.
Course Objectives
- Explain climate change science, impacts, mitigation, adaptation, and the international policy frameworks (UNFCCC, Paris Agreement, NDCs, NAPs, SDGs).
- Map the global and African climate finance landscape, flows, stakeholders, and access barriers.
- Identify and structure key climate finance instruments (grants, concessional loans, green/sustainability bonds, blended finance, carbon markets, PPPs, guarantees).
- Conduct climate risk assessments (physical and transition risks), scenario analysis, and integrate ESG considerations.
- Design and develop bankable mitigation and adaptation project concepts and full proposals aligned with funder requirements.
- Apply inclusive approaches (gender-responsive, social safeguards, community-based) and strong governance/accountability systems.
- Build monitoring, evaluation, and results-based frameworks for climate finance projects and programmes.
- Mobilise resources and pitch projects effectively to public, private, and multilateral sources.
